My Biggest Lessons From Supporting Nursery Owners This Year

Video Summary

When I look back on this past year, it honestly feels like the most transformative period I have ever experienced in the early years sector. I have helped more people open nurseries than ever before. I have supported founders through the hardest, most anxiety-inducing moments of their journeys. Most importantly, I have watched people go from completely doubting themselves to proudly unlocking the doors of their own settings.

There were some profound lessons in all of that—both for my clients and for me as a mentor.

Today, I want to share the biggest insights I’ve gained from supporting nursery owners this year. If you take these lessons into 2026, you might just surprise yourself with what you are capable of achieving.

Lesson 1: Consistency Beats Confidence Every Single Time

My biggest lesson—without question—is this: The people who succeeded this year weren’t the most confident; they were the most consistent.

I supported founders who started with absolutely no childcare experience, no business background, zero confidence, and no idea what Ofsted even expected from them. Yet, they succeeded. Why? Because they showed up. They listened. They took one small step each week, even when they were terrified.

When I look at the incredible journeys of people like Mohsin, Baz, Kabore, and Venus (which you can read about on my Testimonials page), none of them had it easy. None of them breezed through the process feeling 100% ready.

But they kept going. Consistency beats talent, it beats confidence, and it beats experience. Every single time.

Lesson 2: “The Perfect Moment” Is a Trap

The second massive lesson is that the people who got stuck this year didn’t stall because they weren’t smart enough or capable enough. They got stuck because they were waiting.

They were waiting for:

  • The perfect building to appear on the market.

  • The perfect time in their personal lives.

  • The perfect, flawless financial situation.

  • A magical feeling of “readiness.”

The truth is, those things do not exist. There is no perfect moment. Some of my most successful clients this year had buildings fall through, faced stressful planning issues, dealt with unhelpful local councils, and had moments where they genuinely wanted to quit.

If you wait for the perfect circumstances, you will never start. The founders who succeed accept that the journey will be messy, and they take action anyway.

Lesson 3: The Same 3 Struggles Keep Appearing

Whether my clients were opening a setting in London, Manchester, or Edinburgh; whether they had a £100,000 budget or a £10,000 budget; whether they were experienced practitioners or complete beginners—they all struggled with the exact same three things.

1. Financial Planning

People simply didn’t know their break-even point, how many children they needed to cover costs, or how to forecast rent and staffing against the complex Nursery Staffing Ratios. This is exactly why I built the Automatic Nursery Earnings Calculator—because spreadsheets scare people, and founders need instant, simple clarity to move forward.

2. Understanding Ofsted

A massive block for many was the fear of the unknown. People didn’t know what Ofsted actually wanted to see or what the inspector would ask them. This is why I heavily prioritise the Mock Inspection Ofsted Visit to remove that fear entirely.

3. Trying to Do Everything Alone

This is the one that hurts people the most. The people who struggled the longest were those who thought, “I’ll figure it out myself,” or “I’ll wait until I hit a major problem to ask for help.” Opening a nursery is too big a task for one person to carry alone. Asking for support doesn’t make you weak; it speeds you up massively.

Lesson 4: My Own Growth as a Mentor

It wasn’t just my clients who grew this year; I grew too. Supporting someone to open a nursery isn’t just about handing them Nursery Documents or checking their policies. It is about belief.

It is about believing in people before they believe in themselves, seeing their potential, and helping them navigate their deep-seated doubts and fears.

Because of what my clients taught me this year, I expanded how I support the sector:

Every new client taught me something new, and it reminded me why I love doing this work in the first place.

Lesson 5: What I Want YOU to Take Into 2026

If you are reading this and thinking, “I want to open a nursery, but it feels too big, too scary, or too overwhelming,” let me tell you something vital:

Every single person I supported this year felt exactly like you do right now.

And they still did it. They still passed Ofsted. They still built something incredible for their families and their communities.

Your nursery is not a dream; it is a plan waiting to be started. You don’t need endless experience or perfect confidence. You just need guidance, focus, consistency, and the courage to take the first step.

2026 can be your year. But only if you start.
