Both ranges arrive on the same day. Which toys are actually worth buying for an early years setting?
Aldi and Lidl are both launching their wooden toy events on Thursday 8 October 2026. There are some genuinely useful early years resources in both ranges, but a nursery should not buy a toy simply because it is wooden, attractive or inexpensive. The better question is whether it adds something meaningful to your provision and can cope with regular group use.
I have compared eight of the most relevant products for nurseries, pre-schools and childminders, looking at price, play value, likely room use, age guidance, storage and the practical issues that matter after the excitement of the middle aisle has passed.
My strongest picks for early years settings
The best choice depends on the gap in your provision. These are the products that stand out for a clear reason rather than simply looking good in a photograph.
Aldi Supermarket
At £29.99, it supports communication, turn-taking, early number language and familiar real-life role play.
Lidl Food Truck
The strongest choice for a larger dramatic-play investment, with food, utensils and several interactive features.
Lidl Construction Box
Six vehicles, useful small-world possibilities and its own storage box for £6.99, or £6.29 with Lidl Plus.
Aldi Medical or Vet Table
A strong prompt for caring language, empathy, storytelling and conversations about health or animals.
| Product | Price | Retailer age guidance | Strongest use | Main practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aldi Wooden Supermarket | £29.99 | Check packaging | Communication, role play and early maths | Accessories, sound feature and available floor space |
| Aldi Modern Kitchen | £29.99 | Check packaging | Home-corner and imaginative play | Check whether it duplicates resources you already own |
| Aldi Medical or Vet Table | £19.99 | Check packaging | PSED, empathy and communication | Twenty-one pieces need storage and regular checking |
| Aldi Activity Board or Play Cubes | £9.99 | Check packaging and variant | Fine-motor and exploratory play | Several variants are offered, so inspect the exact item |
| Lidl Wooden Food Truck | £39.99 / £35.99 Plus | 3 years and over | Extended collaborative role play | Large footprint, many accessories and battery features |
| Lidl Maths Toy | £6.99 / £6.29 Plus | 1 year and over | Fine-motor play and early number experiences | Works best with meaningful adult interaction |
| Lidl Construction Vehicles Box | £6.99 / £6.29 Plus | 2 years and over | Small-world play and transport interests | Monitor wheels and moving parts through routine checks |
| Lidl Sticks Game | £7.99 / £7.19 Plus | 3 years and over | Counting, number composition and adult-led games | Seventy-eight pieces need controlled use and counting in |
Aldi has the broader event, with more than 50 toys and a particularly strong selection of larger role-play resources.
Wooden Aldi Supermarket
This is my strongest Aldi pick for a nursery that needs a new role-play focus. It includes play cash, a card, an opening till and a scanner with a beeping sound. Staff could extend it with shopping lists, mark-making, labelled baskets and familiar food packaging.
The unit is approximately 56.3cm wide, 26cm deep and 91.4cm high, so it gives substantial play value without the depth of a full play kitchen.
Wooden Modern Kitchen
A kitchen remains one of the most flexible pieces of continuous provision because children can recreate home experiences, invent recipes, negotiate roles and combine it with literacy or maths resources.
This model includes a sink, tap, oven, interactive card plate and double-sided smoothie insert. It measures approximately 60cm wide, 32.6cm deep and 79cm high.
Wooden Medical or Vet Table
For £19.99, this may add more to an established nursery than another kitchen. The medical and vet versions can prompt conversations about caring for others, health appointments, animals, feelings and managing unfamiliar experiences.
Aldi says each set has 21 pieces, including the table, a medical or vet bag and accessories. That makes it versatile, but it also means the pieces need a labelled storage system and regular checking.
Play Cubes or Activity Board
The online listing covers a dinosaur play-cube option, a safari activity board and a computer-style activity board. At £9.99, these could be useful for focused fine-motor play or a quieter area.
Because the designs differ, do not assume the image you have seen is the version available in your local store. Inspect the exact product, age marking, fixings and interactive elements before deciding which room it suits.
Lidl’s strongest advantage is its low-cost learning and small-world resources, plus a ten per cent Lidl Plus discount during the promotional week.
Wooden Food Truck
This is the most feature-rich large role-play item in this comparison. It includes food, utensils, crockery, a refrigerated compartment, drinks dispenser, order pad and a griddle with light, sound and steam functions.
That variety could sustain extended collaborative play, but it also creates more cleaning, battery and loose-part management. Check the footprint carefully before buying. Lidl lists the dimensions as approximately 78cm wide, 30cm high and 80cm deep.
Maths Toy
Lidl describes this as supporting motor skills and teaching numbers and mathematics through play. It is the only product in this selection with an online age recommendation from one year, making it particularly interesting for toddler provision.
The real value will come from responsive adult interaction: naming quantities, noticing patterns, comparing, matching and following the child’s interest. It should not become a formal desk task for very young children.
Construction Vehicles Box
This is probably the safest low-cost recommendation in the article. The set includes an excavator, road roller, concrete mixer, transport vehicles and waste truck, with a wooden box for storage.
Lidl says the vehicles are compatible with standard wooden railway and vehicle sets. That increases their usefulness because they can extend construction play, block play, transport schemas and existing train layouts.
Sticks Game, 78 Pieces
The set contains a lidded wooden box, five mathematical symbols, 20 numbers and 52 counting sticks. It could support counting, numeral recognition, number composition and simple adult-led games with older pre-school children.
However, 78 separate pieces can quickly become 61 pieces in a busy room. Use it as a supervised table resource, count it back into the box and avoid turning early mathematics into repetitive testing.
Which retailer wins for the things that matter?
Aldi Supermarket vs Lidl Food Truck
- Choose Aldi if value, a narrower footprint and flexible shop role play matter most.
- Choose Lidl if you want the more unusual centrepiece and can manage the larger footprint, accessories and batteries.
- The Lidl Plus food-truck price is £6 more than the Aldi supermarket. At the regular price, the difference is £10.
Aldi Kitchen vs another role-play theme
- The kitchen is a dependable continuous-provision resource, but many settings already have one.
- If your existing kitchen is serviceable, the medical or vet table may add more variety for less money.
- Buy to fill an identified gap, not because the product is temporarily available.
Lidl Maths Toy vs Sticks Game
- The Maths Toy has a lower age recommendation and is better suited to exploratory manipulation.
- The Sticks Game offers more explicit number resources for supervised work with children aged three and over.
- In both cases, the quality of adult interaction matters more than the quantity of printed numbers.
Lidl Construction Box
- It is inexpensive, has its own storage and connects with resources many settings already use.
- It can move between the small-world area, construction area, sand, blocks and railway play.
- This is the strongest choice if you want maximum flexibility without buying another large unit.
What I would buy at three different budgets
These bundles are designed around complementary play value rather than simply buying the maximum number of items.
The Lidl Plus learning bundle
Maths Toy (£6.29), Construction Vehicles Box (£6.29) and Sticks Game (£7.19).
Best for: adding several compact resources. Lidl Plus offer required, 8 to 14 October. The Aldi role-play bundle
Wooden Aldi Supermarket (£29.99) plus an Activity Board or Play Cubes option (£9.99).
Best for: one substantial focal resource plus a compact fine-motor activity. The Aldi provision refresh
Modern Kitchen (£29.99), Medical or Vet Table (£19.99) and Activity Board or Play Cubes (£9.99).
Best for: a new setting that needs both large role play and a smaller focused resource.Seven nursery checks to make before buying
A low purchase price can still be poor value if the resource duplicates what you own, cannot be cleaned properly or creates a supervision problem.
- Identify the gap: what experience, interest or area of provision will this genuinely strengthen?
- Check the exact age marking: especially where Aldi’s online listing does not display one or several variants share a listing.
- Inspect every component: look at loose parts, wheels, fixings, hinges, batteries and any item that could detach.
- Plan the space: measure the intended area and allow room for several children to play without blocking routes.
- Plan storage: decide where every accessory will live and how staff will notice when something is missing.
- Consider cleaning: check surfaces and mechanisms against your setting’s cleaning routine before group use.
- Keep the receipt and instructions: assemble the item correctly, record any relevant checks and remove damaged resources promptly.
Aldi wins for large role play. Lidl wins for low-cost learning resources.
Aldi has the stronger selection if you are opening a setting or replacing substantial role-play furniture. The supermarket, kitchen and medical or vet table all have the potential to become meaningful parts of continuous provision rather than short-lived novelty toys.
Lidl offers the more convincing low-cost purchases. The construction vehicles, Maths Toy and Sticks Game are compact, easy to add to existing provision and discounted through Lidl Plus during the promotional week. The Food Truck is the standout centrepiece, although it needs more space and management than its attractive price may initially suggest.
If I could choose only one Aldi item
I would choose the Wooden Aldi Supermarket, unless the setting already has a strong shop. It offers the clearest combination of communication, role play, literacy and early mathematics for £29.99.
If I could choose only one Lidl item
I would choose the Construction Vehicles Box. At £6.99, or £6.29 with Lidl Plus, it is easy to store and can extend several areas of provision without demanding permanent floor space.
